Bride in tulle and tiara, luminous base on Black skin - GM Black Queen

Black & mixed-race skin

Black skin isn't made up like any other skin

The undertones are richer and more complex, and the wrong foundation turns gray within two hours. That's where everything is decided, and that's where most bridal makeup goes wrong.

Makeup for Black skin isn't a style, it's a technique. Shades that actually exist, textures that hold on skin that produces more sebum, contrast that is built rather than erased.

I work with 30 foundation shades and over 30 palettes. That number isn't a sales pitch, it's a necessity. Your exact shade exists somewhere, you just need to have it in your kit.

I learned this at Black Up, in Kinshasa. A brand born for Black skin, where nobody wonders whether the shade exists, you find it. I then refined this craft at MB Beauty, then at Kiko Milano. I've been doing makeup since 2016, in France and in Congo, and more than 50 brides have trusted me.

My approach

The gray cast, and why I won't give you what you ask for

Many of my clients ask me for a lighter complexion. They don't put it that way, they say they want something luminous, less dark. I understand the request. But I don't apply it as is.

A foundation lighter than your skin won't make you luminous. It will make you gray. Light doesn't come from a lightened complexion, it comes from how you work radiance, dimension and warmth: bronzer to warm up the base, contour to sculpt the features, blush for a lift, highlighter placed in just the right spot.

Your Black skin is beautiful. My job is to reveal it, not to correct it.

The prep

How your skin prep works

It all starts with a conversation. When I arrive, I ask how you're doing, what your routine is, whether your skin is sensitive or prone to allergies. Makeup is a collaboration: you know your skin, I know the technique.

Then I look at the nose, the forehead, the chin: those are the areas that tell me everything. Then I massage, always. A face massage to relax your features and get the circulation going. Even after a short night, a massaged face is a glowing face.

Next comes hydration. If your skin is oily, I then apply a mattifying primer where it shines. If it's dry, I lean into hydration and a glowy base. I let the products sink in while I start on the eyes and brows, then I do the base.

Long wear

Lasting 24 hours, even when you cry

It all comes down to the prep. That's what makes makeup last, far more than the product layered on top. Then come the setting products, before and after: a setting primer, then two sprays, Charlotte Tilbury first, which melts powders into the skin, and One Size to finish, to lock the makeup in.

And for the tears, because there will be some, I use Inglot's Duraline. It's a waterproof product I mix into the concealer and foundation before applying them. The result: when the emotion hits, your makeup doesn't move. I dab away the tears, add a touch of concealer if needed, and you're good to go.

You're allowed to cry on your wedding day. I'm ready for it.

Wedding day

Your wedding day, step by step

From the call the night before to the last dance, nothing is left to chance.

The day before

The wig install

If planned, it's done the day before. You bring your wig, I take care of the rest: bleaching the knots, softening, install. Precise styling (bun, pixie, sleek...) is available as an option. On the day, you won't give it a second thought.

The night before

I call you

We go over everything together, calmly. I ask only one thing: get a good night's sleep, shower and have breakfast before I arrive.

From 5am

I bring everything

My kit, and even the lighting. You haven't prepared anything, and that's how it should be. You're at home, I set up around you.

First step

Your skin comes first

A face massage to relax your features, then hydration. This prep is what will make the makeup last, far more than the products layered on top.

1 to 1.5 hours

The makeup

Base, eyes, setting before and after. I prefer to take my time: this makeup has to last 24 hours, tears included.

It's time

You're ready

All that's left is to live your day. The makeup won't move.

Optional

A wig install designed for your wedding

A well-installed wig isn't seen. It's noticed. No visible lace, no tension, no discreet adjusting between two photos. Installed the day before, it has to last until the last dance without ever reminding you it's there.

Prep starts with bleaching the knots, the step that gives a natural look. Then I work on softness, so it hugs the shape of your head. As an option, I also offer precise styling with a flat iron or curling iron, bun, pixie or sleek, designed with your makeup in mind. The line of the wig and the structure of the base are thought through together.

An install made to hold all day

I use professional waterproof adhesives, applied in several layers, each layer dried before the next. It takes time, it takes precision, and it's what guarantees nothing moves in the heat or on the dance floor.

I never turn down a wig. Some clients arrive with an HD lace wig, others can't afford one, but they want to look beautiful on their wedding day, and they have exactly the same right to. Whatever wig you bring, I do my work with the same care.

Nothing to prepare on your side: some clients arrive with a wig that's ready to go, others prefer that I handle everything, from start to finish. I bring the equipment, all you have to do is sleep well.
